A Spectacle of Christmas Lights in BC 2008Enjoy the Magic of the Holidays in Steveston British Columbia
Visit the waterfront of scenic British Columbia to enjoy the holidays, outdoor Christmas lights and a maritime Santa in the fishing Village of Steveston
Commercial fishing villages take on a special mood with the approach of the holiday season. Lights go up in the rigging and visitors pause just a little longer to enjoy the sight of the harbor. Friends take time to reacquaint themselves after work for the year is finished. An example of this coastal Christmas spirit occurs every year in Steveston, British Columbia, located just outside of the City of Richmond. A Historic Fishing Village - The Village of Steveston is a historic fishing village with its strategic location on the mouth great Fraser River. Steveston is a working port; its historic label could cloud the fact to many that this is the largest commercial fishing harbor in Canada. Some 600 fishing vessel call the harbor and port home, services in support of the fishing industry are robust. Working with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Steveston Harbour Authority manages and operates the terminal facility. One unique feature is the Public Fish Sales Float where you can buy the catch of the day directly from the fisher that catches it. A Community Celebration - Steveston's Christmas celebration begins December 12, 2008 at 6 pm with the gathering of carolers on a hayride that leads to Fishermen's Park. The procession of carolers continues to a tree lighting ceremony at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery. This cannery is a designated national historic site and preserves for visitors a portion of the rich commercial fishing heritage of the region. Shops and restaurants will be open late and friends, neighbors, and visitors will have time to enjoy the warmth of the Christmas spirit. Santa Arrives by Boat - The best is yet to come. Santa arrives on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 2 pm by boat to the Fishermen's Wharf for a walk to the Georgia Cannery escorted by the children impatiently awaiting his return. Santa greets each of his guests and is available for photographs with the children. A good time is had by all! Events in Stevenston are organized by Tourism Richmond and the Steveston Community Society. They would love to hear from you and scheduling information for this year's events is available at their websites.
