The Alaska Marine Advisory Program (MAP) has published its fourth edition of the Alaska Seas & Coasts series with an issue written by Suite 101 Feature Writer Alan Sorum entitled Clean Boating - Alaska Seas & Coasts seeks to provide useful information to help people make informed decisions regarding use of marine resources. Issues are published twice a year and focus on a single marine resource related topic. MAP is part of the University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, with funding from both the State of Alaska and NOAA's National Sea Grant College Program.
The Marine Advisory Program works to involve coastal residents in opportunities to diversify waterfront economies. Subjects of interest include marine recreation, shellfish mariculture, and direct marketing of seafood by commercial fishermen.
Clean Boating provides boat owners with practical information on how to protect their vessel, better control mooring costs, and protect the marine environment. The publication stresses the importance of communicating with marina managers and the benefits of maintaining a good working relationship with them. Response procedures and best management practices are discussed for handling boat related wastes, vessel maintenance, and boat winterizing.
