Many boaters prefer to leave their vessels in the water for the off-season. Here are a few pointers to make the process more successful.

Several of steps needed to winterize a boat being stored in the water are the same as one being placed on the uplands. These include winterizing the fresh water system by draining or using non-toxic antifreeze like propylene glycol, deciding what do about filling your fuel tank if you are using ethanol, and covering the vessel with a tarp or shrink-wrap covering.

So what are the additional steps required to prepare for in the water storage?

  • Double up your mooring lines and add extra fenders. Point your bow into the prevailing wind if possible.
  • Check your thru hull fitting for corrosion and loose hoses. Many boats do not have a valve attached to their thru-hull fittings. If a hose fails, it is much more difficult to shut off the water. Read more about this in the article on vessel damage control.
  • Insure your storage batteries and charging system are in good condition. Operationally check your bilge pumps.
  • Check rudder and propeller shaft stuffing boxes for leaks. You will want to keep them tighter than normal while your boat is not in use.
  • If you moor in a marina subject to icing, take steps to prevent ice damage to your boat. Use a bubbler or circulating pump system to reduce ice build up around your hull.
  • Check your boat often and after major weather events. Consider hiring a licensed and bonded boat watch service. There are even monitoring systems available to notify of potential problems on your boat

We have covered the basics of long-term storage of boats. They are correctly shoring up the vessel in the boatyard, wintering and making the boat ready for dry storage, and taking additional steps for boats stored in the water for the off-season. Your harbormaster and boat mechanic are great resources to consult as you ready a boat for storage. Take advantage of them!
