The Fish and Wildlife Service has released a new quarterly magazine centered on the Agency's fisheries program called Eddies: Reflections on Fisheries Conservation.

This launch represents 137 years of experience by the Agency managing fisheries and aquatic conservation efforts in the United States since 1871. Eddies will tell the story of these conservation efforts in a style that audiences without a science background can appreciate. Copies of the magazine are available for download or viewing online.

Speaking to the press about the magazine's launch, Assistant Director for Fisheries and Habitat Conservation Gary Frazer says, "Fish and fishing anchor people to place. Eddies anchors its readers to the future of fisheries conservation in the U.S. Perhaps our greatest gift to the future is to do our best right now -- and that's what Eddies is about -- communicating to those we serve and to those we work alongside."

Features of the Inaugural Issue - The Spring of 2008 edition addresses a number of fishing and conservation issues in a series of regular columns and feature stories.

  • Watermarks - Columnist Craig Springer forwards the latest in fisheries news. Some highlights are the whereabouts of fish hatchery vessel M/V Spenser F. Baird, survival rates of smaller sized lake trout stocked in Wisconsin lakes, hatchery enhancement of red drum in South Carolina, and the health of Atlantic sturgeon
  • Pioneers - The story of Robert Thoesen is detailed. Thoesen, a long-time Fish and Wildlife employee, innovated aerial stocking of hatchery fish, development of new fish foods, and promoted improved technologies centered on aquaculture and hatchery programs.
  • American Fishes - Steelhead: Ten-Pound Lightning. Author Jim Martin tells the story this ocean going rainbow trout renowned by anglers of all stripes. The Steelhead lifecycle and hatchery efforts to bolster the species are key components of the article
  • A Tradition Tied to Economics - Three writers, Frank Peterson, Gordon Robertson and James Caudill discuss the economics of sport fishing, the importance of promoting the legacy of fishing by sharing the avocation with friends, making investments in promoting robust fish populations and the value of fishing the national economy
  • Fishing Experiences - Several feature stories included in this first issue describe fishing on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Montana, along the Flathead River, and in New Mexico's Gila and Aldo Leopold Wildernesses
  • Meanders - In Eddies closing column, Craig Springer tells readers about his attraction to Indian Creek along the border of Ohio and Indiana, and fishing there with his young son.

Eddies: Reflections on Fisheries Conservation is an ideal publication for anglers interested conservation efforts and improving fisheries for future generations. The information is excellent and the price is right. Craig Springer, Editor of Eddies, can be contacted for more information about the magazine at 505 248-6867 or by email.
