Here are a few things to do while waiting to get back out on the water. Boating resolutions for the New Year.

Looking back at the year past, we may see areas where boating provided experiences that we didn't expect. It might have been the anchor thrown over, but unattached to a line or a spectacular landing at the dock with multiple witnesses, but fate, inexperience, bad karma, or just poor planning can cause the unexpected to happen with the best of us.

New Years is the off-season for us in the northern hemisphere and the prime time to reflect back on the more remarkable events of the year. Boaters in Australia have the next few months to stock up on their own sailing stories. Here are a few things that you can consider to boost that poor karma and possibly improve your boating experiences in the new season ahead.

  • Take a boating safety class – Consider taking a class like the America's Boating Course from a unit of the U.S. Power Squadron or Coast Guard Auxiliary. Better yet, bring your entire crew along for the training.
  • Finish your annual vessel maintenance – If weather and work conditions permit it, plan to complete your annual vessel maintenance. The off-season is an excellent time to refit, overhaul, and prep your boat for the upcoming season. Avoid the rush and competition for resources by planning to complete your work early this year.
  • Join the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary – The fellowship, training, and public service opportunities provide many boaters with a lifetime of memorable experiences.
  • Buy a new Sea Sport Offshore 3000 - I had to slip this one in, going to boat shows, surfing the web, and ordering catalogs in search of the perfect next boat is a time honored tradition for the off-season boater.
  • Get a Vessel Safety Check – Ensure your boat is safe and ready for the new season with a Vessel Safety Check provided by a member of the U.S. Power Squadron or Coast Guard Auxiliary.
  • Take a friend boating – Introduce a friend to the magic of boating. The Discover Boating and Discover Sailing sites are excellent starting points for an overview of the available opportunities.
  • Plan a trip – Take a fishing trip of a lifetime to Alaska, cruise Glacier Bay, or plan ahead for a Norwegian Christmas cruise. Researching and planning for the best big adventure is always in order.
  • Buy a book – Read up on your favorite pastime. There are great books out there on boating and sailing. My favorite press is the Alaska Sea Grant College Program.

Safety enjoy your boating and sailing experiences this season and remember to visit Boating and Sailing at Suite101 to keep up on what's new!
