If you spend any time in my Alaskan neighborhood, you will notice how many cars and trucks are sporting roof racks carrying every form of outdoor recreational equipment imaginable. I was reading Kelby Carr's article on Minivan Accessories for Travel and thought about our widespread adoption of roof rack systems. Wither it's a mini-van or the family Suburban, there never seems to be enough room for all the gear. Then again, there aren't had many cars that you can stuff a kayak into safely.
I have seen two major manufacturers of roof rack systems in Alaska and the Northwest states. They are Yakima (round crossbars) and Thule (square crossbars).
A typical roof rack system has towers that attach the rack to the vehicle, crossbars that support loaded materials between the towers, and assorted mounts that allow safe carriage of things like bikes and snowboards on your car.

We have purchased products from Yakima and Thule through the local outlet for REI. REI often has a sale every year that greatly discounts the cost of purchasing a roof rack system. The annual dividend isn't bad either. Purchasing a roof rack for vehicle will greatly help you get out and enjoy your favorite outdoor sport.
