In summer 2009, tall ships, schooners, windjammers and other spectacular sailing ships will visit the coast of Nova Scotia from Halifax to Lunenburg and Louisbourg.

There is certainly no better way to enjoy the spectacular coastal scenery of the eastern Canadian province of Nova Scotia than with a sailing ship going by with its sails completely unravelled and filled by the wind. This view usually stays a dream out of the past, but not this summer!

Between July 16th and July 20th, 2009, windjammers, schooners and other sailing ships from all over the world will gather in Halifax for the Tall Ships Festival 2009 for a weekend full of activities and a spectacular sailing parade. And there will be other opportunities to view this armada of historic sailing ships along the Nova Scotia coast.

After the big event in Halifax they will split up and visit several harbors along the coast of this east Canadian province. One group will sail west and south, a second group heads for the east coast and Cape Breton and a third group goes to the smaller harbors along the north coast of Nova Scotia. All of these harbortowns have strong historical ties to the sea and offer a spectacular backdrop for this parade of sailing ships. Wharfs, fishing industries and even pirates, that once haunted these areas of Nova Scotia, make them suitable destinations for the armada of sailing ships and windjammers.

The ships can be viewed along the coast of Nova Scotia from July 16th to August 1st, 2009. They are participants of the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge, an international sailing regatta, which starts on April 30th in Vigo, Spain. They will cross the Atlantic and stay in Halifax for the five-day-long Tall Ships Festival, which is part of this sailing regatta.

It is the biggest festival of its kind in North America. And the side events are as impressive as the participating sailing ships: music groups will play in the harbor area, the ships are open for visitors and culinary highlights await anybody along the wharfs who likes fresh seafood.

The Nova Scotia towns that will be visited are: Halifax, the capital of the province, Lunenburg, home of the fishing and racing schooner Bluenose and proud owner of an interesting marine museum, Port Hawkesbury, Louisbourg, a harbortown founded by the French colonists, Sydney, where today's ferries to Newfoundland dock, Pictou and Pugwash. Each of these cities plans additional events that invite visitors to enjoy the hospitality of the Nova Scotians. And who follows the trail of the sailing ships will see maritime attractions as well as beautiful scenery and historic sights that are worth a visit, too.
