Someone asked me about Alaska fishing destination resorts. After working for Wrangell Harbor nearly eight years, my first thought was Waterfall Resort located near Ketchikan, Alaska. While every resort destination is likely to have some drawbacks, everything I've seen and heard about Waterfall has been positive. This resort is one of the better known fishing resorts found in southeast Alaska.
Waterfall Resort is a premier fly-in fishing lodge located in Southeast Alaska. Developed from of the remains of the historic Waterfall Salmon Cannery (dating from 1912), the resort is located on beautiful Prince of Wales Island. The only access available to the resort is by floatplane from nearby Ketchikan, Alaska. Alaska Airlines provide Ketchikan with jet aircraft service.
Prince of Wales Island is located at the southern end of the Alaska panhandle region on the Tongass National Forest. British Columbia, Canada is only a few miles to the east. This island is second only to Kodiak Island as the largest in the state. It measures some 135 miles long and 35 miles wide, with an area encompassing 2,231 square miles. The land surrounding Waterfall Resort is pristine wilderness; a temperate rainforest covered with towering Sitka spruce and yellow cedar. Average rainfall is 100 inches per year and there are literally hundreds of crystal clear salmon spawning streams on the island. This unspoiled landscape accounts for some the most dynamic salmon runs in the state. Silver (Coho) and King (Chinook) salmon fishing is simply incredible.
Waterfall provides luxury accommodations, excellent dining, and an amazing scenic backdrop, but people come for the fishing. The resort operates a up to date fleet of fully enclosed Almar sport fishing boats and conducts its own King of Kings Salmon Tournament every year. This tournament provides guests with the chance to win $100,000 USD for the largest King salmon caught in the season. Full fish processing, vacuum packaging, and flash freezing is part of the vacation package at Waterfall.
Waterfall Resort will be re-open from May 28 to September 1 in 2007. King salmon fishing starts in the early part of the season, Silvers come later in summers, and there is excellent halibut fishing to found the entire season. Rates for 4 day and 3 night packages start at $3,645, which includes floatplane fair from Ketchikan. Waterfall has conference facilities and is an ideal location for a corporate retreat. If you have never experienced fishing in Alaska, you can't go wrong starting at Waterfall Resort.
